16mm film: optical sound to digital audio
Hi,
Im a media arts student, occasionally exploring sound. Im wondering if anyone might be able to give me some advice.
I am looking at trying to convert optical sound on 16mm film into digital audio. I could of course play the film through a projector and record the sound via mic, BUT the actual film stock Im using has been heavily manipulated (scratched, twisted, bent, painted - a direct film) and so Im unable to get it through a projector. Is there some kind of process/application where I can convert the image (already digitalised - scanned) into audio, effectively doing what the projector would do anyway? Guesses welcome.

Did you find a way to do this? You'd imagine someone out there has wanted to do this before and come up with a tool for it, if only you could find it.. I once saw an app someone made which let you put a vinyl record in a scanner and derive the audio (not very clearly, but still) from the scanned image of the grooves. Surely this would be easier?

I ended up postponing the effort as an overseas trip distracted. But this appears to be exactly what I was looking for (evidently my web searching skills are lacking). Thanks so much for your efforts. I will give this a go and report back on its abilities.
