Tera Nova Symphonia Antarctica by DJ Spooky
Dear god please don't waste your time and money on this crap!
How you can possibly justify a concert about antarctica that includes less than 25% of your own footage and absolutely no sign of the slightest hint of a field recording????
I was expecting some dj style music concrete mash up of cracking ice and howling wind and was assaulted instead with badly written music for piano, violin and cello. Mr Spooky was supposedly "remixing" the live artists but for all I could tell he could easily have been replaced by a reverb unit and a delay pedal.
The only interesting sound i heard all night was when some of the equipment fucked up and there was a mistake in the performance.
The video accompaniment was a lame montage of antarctic footage, demented powerpoint style graphs about rising sea levels and other statistics and archival footage of communist countries invading antarctica.
About 10 minutes in I got up and complained to an usher because it didn't appear to my ears that DJ Spooky was actually producing any sound despite his knob twiddling. It turns out that he wasn't making any sound apart for vaguely manipulated loops of the strings and piano.
I really was expecting something quite different. If what I got was better or even half as good as what i expected I would have been happy. I am not happy.

I do not recommend high expectations Kit, try aiming below the earth's mantle. Hey though, maybe it is just what you are in to and you can write a much more positive review later.
I think the main problem was not so much that I had high expectations, more that I had completely different expectations as to what I thought was going to happen vs what did happen.
I really would have liked to have heard a penguin though...

this show blew my mind.
i couldn't believe someone could actually put together such an amateur, outrageously poorly executed piece of crap and show it as part of MIAF. give me 2 hours - shit, one hour, and i'll put together a better visual show. the most apt description i could come up with for this was "spinning powerpoint presentation." what a waste of time.
oh, i didn't think the music was as horrid as the video, but spooky sure as shit wasn't doing much.
