the soundboard

..because we can

Hey Cats,

I hope every one is well.

Within Earshot are having our first ever residency at First Site Gallery, featuring spatial sound installations from Lizzie Pogson, Simon Taylor and Jojo Petrina. Opening night is on Tuesday September 16th from 5.30pm - 7.30pm. The exhibition will run till Thursday 25th September (gallery closes on Sunday & Mondays). This is to make way for the closing night concert (Friday 26th September from 5.30ish - 9.30ish PM) which YOU guys will hopefully be involved in!

Lizzie, Jojo and Simon will bump out their installations, leaving First Site empty for all of us to stage a night full of play.

The basic idea is for all of us to have a big improvisatory jam together. Every one brings their sound making tools, whether it be acoustic or non acoustic and occupy one of the many nooks and crannies available at first site gallery for the night.

The aim is to create an interesting live and breathing sound scape, where audiences have the ability to tune in/tune out to multiple sound sources, forging spatial relationships through their physical movements and most importantly, find interesting dynamic relationships and modes of communication between everyone playing inside the space.

Considering the amount of players we may have, it is up to us in our ability to play with others through LISTENING in order to achieve a level of dynamism between delicacy and anarchy. To float between these two points would be the most ideal situation, otherwise it ends up being another boring testosterone wank fest. I think all of us have the ability to listen to one another to create fun and spontaneous sonic chit chatter.

Rules of engagement are as follows:

1) Bring whatever sound set up you desire whether it be acoustic/non-acoustic
2) If non-acoustic, and you require amplification, You can only use one speaker!! One speaker per person!! Speaker choice is yours, from tinny small mega-phonic ones, to a bass amp, what ever! No big PA's allowed please.
3) All gear is to be supplied from you.
4) Everyone involved, will be given a job that I will allocate personally, to help out with our gallery residency. i.e Gallery sitting, bump in/bump out, cleaning or bar work.

BUMP IN FOR CONCERT: Friday 26th September 3PM
BUMP OUT/CLEANING: Friday 26th September AFTER CONCERT. Must be done decently to avoid coming in on Saturday!!

I am in the process of obtaining a temporary liquor license for this event. So it might be a big one. First Site Gallery curator Simon Pericich has given us the all clear and is happy to extend gallery hours till about nine or ten pm.

WHAT DO I WANT???

Any one who is interested in being involved please email me back asap. Also include what sort of sonic style you'll be doing, what type of speaker, and if it is acoustic/non acoustic. ASAP please, because I will put your names down in the program, which will be given out to everyone for the duration of the exhibition and they'll act as flyers for you guys to hand out also. I'll have the flyers printed by Monday next week, so you must tell me by the weekend or I'll assume you are not interested.

AND THEN WHAT??

Once I have everyone's email saying "yeah!!! count me in, here is my info", I will start mapping out where you guys will be positioned in First Site Gallery. If you have a preference let me know and I'll try and accommodate your requests, but I'll be treating the positioning with much curatorial care.

Okay, any questions, please ask.

Much Love.

Hey guys..

I hope the fact you may be allocated some house keeping duties for the up keep of the residency hasn't turned you guys off from playing! don't worry, I only have five gallery shifts remaining to be filled, and am asking past displacement kids to lend a helping hand. And there's room for movement for improv strategies and indeterminate structures for the night which we can all talk about..

BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still need more players for the closing night concert.. Don't be shy... please email me. It'll be fun!.

So far I have

Vijay
Joshua
Michael Pulsford
Lizzie
Rosalind
Richard
Martin??
Matt Leaf??

Another 5 players would be great!! or more!

Let me know asap, so you I can put your name on the program.

Que, I'm playing a gig with my band that night, so I could do this thing maybe 5:30 till 7.
I would be using a bass + amp + effects, just loud enough to get some feedback happening with the guitar resting directly infront of the amp. An idea I had (to supress volume and add intrigue) would be to enclose my setup in a monolithic box (which I would have to source).

Hey Que,
I'm down too. (Did you get my email) I know I've probably missed the handout deadline, sorry. If there's still room I'd like to do the Whale in a Box thing - decks n' FX, though in this space I'll surely tone it down somewhat to fit the vibe.
