the soundboard

..because calling it the whiteboard would just confuse the new kids

James Gaunt and I just heard we got fully funded for our student-run record label idea! It's called Excellent Academic Records, or EAR for short. The first project is a compilation CD around a theme, and you're invited to submit works.

The theme is 'dreaming of summer in winter'. You know how you feel about summer when you're deep in the middle of a freezing and depressing Melbourne winter? It's about that.

You can submit stereo sound works of any duration or any genre. The deadline for submissions is Friday August 1. This gives you all of the winter holidays to freeze your pale artist's arse off, dream about summer, and make a piece from whatever angst or joy that conjures up.

The works which seem to best respond to the theme will end up on the CD. (Cover art will be sourced in the same way, by inviting submissions of images.) It'll be mastered and 200 copies will be pressed. All contributors will get a copy or two for their personal enjoyment; the rest will be sent to selected experimental-friendly radio and press locally, nationally and internationally. Its like a giant dispersed exhibition, and a chance to get your work in front of a hand-picked international audience.

Initial submissions should be emailed in mp3 format to soundartclub@gmail.com. (Anything that makes it onto the CD will eventually need to be supplied in an uncompressed format like WAV or AIFF, but mp3s are easier for the initial submission process.)

Say record label people, if the open submission idea doesn't go ahead, I had an idea for a cd where the artists are all given a set of sounds with which to apply their unique tastes and talents to produce a track. I figure the sound files could be added to the end of the cd to perpetuate the idea.

What do you think of that?

kind of like a remix of a song that never existed, ya know?

Thanks Matt! Three tracks and counting. I suppose I have to extend the submission date. And open it up to non-RMIT people. It's a start though!
