the soundboard

..because we can

Hey folks

I'm going to Vietnam finally... And have ummmmeeddd and arrrrrr'd about too many things.

I'm just about to purchase a portable HD recorder (either Sound devices 7xx or nagra LB)

but I am a bit worried about taking it to Vietnam. I'll be back packing so security on $7,000 worth of gear is questionable..

I'll be insured but I'm imagining what a pain the arse it would be if shit happened early in the trip, leaving me with nothing to record with.../ or stolen/damaged audio files.

OR should I just take something lighter/less expensive (Edirol RO9H) therefore sacrificing the quality of the audio?

What are your thoughts?

Experiences?

Know any good insurance policies for sound equipment when traveling?

Considering practicalities and decent sound.
if you were going to a humid environment & back packing, what field recording devices would you take....
what mics would you use???

Hey Que

When i bought my round the world ticket i took out insurance, it covered me for anything bought within the last 6 months, as long as you still had the receipt. I actually DID lose my audio recorder whilst travelling (an r-09) and it was a real bummer. And i said to myself "as if it will happen to me" Insurance took a while to come thru, but i borrowed some cash to get a new recorder asap

i dont know much bout plans though, as in ,coverage up to 7k...

i talked to phil once and he talked about being in a humid spot with all his mates around him having their smaller devices fail... while his Nagra came thru with the goods..

Ultmately it's up to you I guess. They are expensive units. My problem was lugging to much stuff around, I was in a rush and put a bag down, but jumped off a train in a hurry and left it behind

I'd ask yourself what you want out of the trip... a holiday, or a bit of headache worrying about all your expensive stuff? Mind you, the smaller devices actaully do pull off pretty decent sound at times. If sound recording is the focus of your trip then i'd say take a Nagra/Sound Devices, but if it's more about enjoying the beach and hooking into some drinks with canoes, then i'd take something much more portable and convenient.

When are you going? If it's not wet season it might not be as humid as you fear.

(And if it is wet season it might be wetter than you can imagine..)

I'd like to know about any insurance leads that turn up though, cos I might be doing a field recording trip in Indo later this year

Depends on the application I guess, is it for personal or professional stuff?
