Siemans Fine Art Scholarship - but not if you are a soundonly artist

Is anyone else a tad annoyed that the Siemens Fine Art Scholarship is somewhat lost in the dark ages when it comes to sound...?

"Acceptable mediums include Ceramics, Drawing, Fine Art Photography, Gold & Silversmithing, Media Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Sound (Sound applicants must have a visual component with the artwork)."
*notice how they try to slip it under the radar by using brackets - like it doesn't really matter it's just an after thought - no biggie

Oh yes rightyo, sure thing, i'll just wack an Iphoto slideshow in with my painfully sculpted field recordings coz it would appear they are not sufficient on their own
I don't see that any other medium is required to cross pollinate.

RAHHHH!
Is sound not enough on it's own?

it gets more purile....

ring siemens headquarters in staines , UK on 01784 461616 and listen to how they answer the phone. i'd heard (previously) they'd reversed the order of the greeting to shut down the beavis and butthead giggling but apparently not.

Hi Darrin,

I was not going to reply to your response but on reflection, I was reminded of why I brought up this discussion in the first place.

re the term, "Music Art Competition"

I am not discussing the above. I am referring to Scholarships. There is a huge difference between the two.
There are colouring in competitions and there are scholarships. I don't think I need to detail what makes what.
But - it is interesting to note that as fine art students we pay to do a course which teaches us how to apply for the above for the purpose of support/survival in everyday life as we learn how to financially support ourselves as an artist.

re: Fine art dept. merging with journalism in seven years time - i don't care - i am not discussing this mergence nor do i want to argue about the future, "What ifs". I want to find a solution to the problem at hand - the one which centers around the fact that there is a lack of scholarship opportunity presented to the student sound artists of rmit where they are able to submit sound works.

re: Crying on the couch.... welll i don't think it's wise to project your own work practice habit on to those that are executed by your students.
We may look up to you, admire you, find you inspirational but we are not you,

your faithful student,

Tessa

- except to say that the tenacity, ingenuity, initiative and resilience of sound students/grads doesn't come from entering MUSIC in ART competitions. and whilst i wouldn't dismiss a, b and c, they're mere existence can only help your t.i.i.r. quotient (unless you're too busy crying to get off the couch).

and whilst you're all fighting siemens, why not rail against the visual arts board at the australia council? they're not returning the calls about my noise album either. (and MMM aren't playing the Anselm Kieffer painting I sent them - but don't get me started on those fuckers...)

siemens, who set up this prize (as i understand it) before the 'media arts school' amalgamated with the 'school of art' shouldn't be at the mercy of an RMIT administrative decision. it's a visual arts prize. but - oh sound's now in the school? what happens when the whole thing gets amalgamated with applied comms in 7 years? they going to include journalism?

c'mon! over and above the goodwill of their gesture, either they want the winning piece for their wall, or it's an art investment. an mp3 of your work is hardly going to improve their superfund portfolio in the latter instance. and anything you do that's remotely interesting/cutting edge won't be useful as music on hold.

life's so unfair!

(that double espresso coming up now)

To make money out of Art you either need an audience with a high disposable income or a wealthy patron. Either way you then need to compromise you Art to please that audience or patron so as to keep your income.

In sound, recordings are not perceived as having any monetary value any more with the proliferation of mp3’s freely traded over the internet, legal or otherwise.

Record labels that used to be patrons of sound are now commercial factories pumping out a fashionable commodity to the lowest common denominator.

So I would think that the only way a sound artist is going to make an income is through live performance but this also depends on their being an audience which is not something I have really encountered in a sustainable way in Australia.

People think of sound in terms of going out to see a band rock out while they get pissed and talk shit to their friends or go out dancing to the latest dj at the latest club.

It’s all fine to make Art for ones self but I wouldn’t expect that anyone would be willing to pay you a live-able income just so you can do whatever it is you want.

Basically, Art can be a hobby where you please yourself or Art can be a business where you are confined by trends and fashions and the perceived monetary value of your work now and in the future.

My 2 cents.

why do ya think Phil and Darrin have university jobs! well, they probably don't get paid nearly enough for what their worth, but it's probably a whole lot better than earning a living from pumping out cds and doing gigs.

Personally, I've never done music(s) for money and never will. For every 20 shit gigs there will be 1 that will make you think that your existence in the world is justified. Plus, I don't think it's so bad to have a regular job just to pay the bills (and that you can walk out the door and not think about it ), then you can do whatever you damn well like for all the other days!

I've given up on scholarships, because, as a second time round undergraduate I 'must already have' a high paying salary job (as a result of my first degree) and therefore I'm mrs money-bags! And don't get me started on centrelink.

Back to my bowl of lentils..
