the soundboard

..because we can

If you were looking for an excuse to go to Indonesia, or you're going anyway and want to play some gigs, Yes No Wave Music and Performance Klub in Jogjakarta are starting a monthly series of curated experimental sound events called 'Yes No Klub' and are putting out a call for artists.

They say:

"A primary focus of our events is to provide space for musics that may otherwise not fit into the events and venues that are usually available to bands/sound makers. We would obviously be most interested in having international groups/individuals play as part of our program. At this early stage we have yet to find time to secure financial support for the event so cannot pay for transportation costs, however have accommodation, meals, local transfers and assistance for anyone able to join us here in Jogja. We also have fellow organisers in Jakarta, Malang, Surabaya, Semarang, Solo and Bandung who can assist in putting together a Java-wide tour. If you or anyone you know is interested in such a prospect (especially for those of you who have programs that involve passing across the hemispheres – it is not very expensive or difficult to get from Kuala Lumpa or Singapore if you happen to transit there) we would love to hear from you. And please feel free to pass this information on to your networks."

There's next to no arts funding in Indonesia, but there's a shitload of art, mostly in Jogjakarta.  Everything's done by people pooling resources and energy and making shit happen collectively, lo-fi if necessary.  It's a totally rad city and I can pretty much promise you you'll have fun if you go there.

If you want to try and source funding you could try the Australia Indonesia Institute, who fund artist residencies and collaborations in Indonesia. There's also the Arts Victoria Cultural Exchange grant, but that looks like a motherfucker of an application to fill out if you ask me.  And maybe there'd be a way to swing it through RMIT Union Arts if you're still a student?  I can't remember if they fund this kind of thing or not.

Anyway.  The contact for Yes No Klub is called Wok and is at woktherock@gmail.comAnd Yes No Klub have a Facebook group.
