- Hey Alister! Yes, I would give the H4n the thumbs up, for the budget line of field recorders. The xlr inputs are a big bonus, and the H4n is definitely more rugged than just the H4. I have used mine a lot for a variety of things. The preamps are not too bad for the money. If you have heaps of cash I'd be buying a Sound Devices recorder, but I'd have to sell a kidney for that... You can get some good deals on ebay with big SD cards, which is where I got mine. Hope that helps!

I saw you were going to buy one of the zoom h4n mics a while back. I'm looking at getting one and was wondering if you would give it the thumbs up? Have you found it useful for a variety of applications or is it better at some things more than others? I’m looking for something that I can do a bit of everything on. Record instruments for incorporation into compositions, field recording, vocals….
